1. It’s bad luck for the groom to see the bride in her dress before the wedding:
This well known superstition dates back to when arranged marriages were more common. Couples were not allowed to meet each other until all details of their marriage were figured out. It was very rare that the bride and groom got cold feet about the marriage at the last minute, but to prevent this embarrassment, families didn’t allow any contact between couples until the day of the wedding to better ensure that the wedding ceremony would go as planned.
2. Something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue:
The origin behind this poem is pretty simple: the bride wears something old to represent her past, something new to symbolize her new marriage, something borrowed from a happy couple for the success of their marriage to rub off on the newlyweds, and the something blue to symbolizes love & fidelity.
3. Carrying the bride across the threshold:
This traditioned originated in Medieval Europe. Europeans believed that when a woman got married, that evil spirits and demons followed her into her home through the soles of her feet after her marriage. As a result, grooms carried their brides in, keeping them safe and away from the evil .
4. Rain on your wedding day:
Rain on your special day may appear like a big disappointment, but it may be a blessing in disguise. While rain on your wedding may not seem ideal, old traditions say that it’s actually good luck. Rain denotes purity, fertility and unity. Isn’t it ironic?
5. Wearing a veil
While most people know that the groom lifts his brides veil to share their first kiss as a married couple, few know the history behind this tradition. Wearing a veil began with Ancient Greeks and Romans as a way of protecting a bride from evil spirits in her marriage.
6. Finding a spider on your dress
Finding a creepy-crawly on your expensive wedding dress may seem like bad luck, but it's actually good luck. Based on Ancient Chinese culture, spiders are considered to bring wealth into your life. Spiders are seen as auspicious and as a good omen. Who knew something we consider gross and scary can actually bring luck to your marriage ?
7. Sugar cube in your glove
A rather simple superstition that the Ancient Greek believed in is that placing a sugar cube in your glove makes your marriage sweet and full of love.
8. Wedding bells
Wedding bells were rung to inform people of the ceremony taking place in the church. The Irish believe it scares off any evil spirits with the intention of destroying a couples marriage and happiness. Wow, people sure do go through a lot to keep away those evil spirits!
Make sure to consider these superstitions as your big day comes closer, and don’t forget to keep an eye out for any spiders on your dress or a dark cloud in the sky.
